Weep holes are small openings intended to let collected liquid water leave selected sign enclosures. They are easy to discuss as if the rule were simply “drill at the bottom.” An illuminated sign may contain branch-circuit connections, power supplies, conductors, grounding and bonding, LED systems, seams, raceways and structural parts. Its openings belong to an approved complete construction.

The design should limit entry, route unavoidable moisture away from sensitive parts, drain it safely and remain serviceable.
Drainage should be considered with material and corrosion decisions. A fabricated cabinet may use aluminum components, but coatings, cut edges, fasteners, dissimilar metals, salt, trapped debris and standing water still affect the assembly. Interior dams or wiring paths can hold water above a visible opening.

How large should a weep hole be?
There is no safe one-size-fits-all diameter. Size interacts with expected water, surface tension, debris, insects, enclosure rating, venting, flame or spread requirements, edge protection, structural material, appearance and the sign's listing or evaluation. Can weep holes be added to an existing illuminated sign?
